Rzeszow Castle

The castle of the Lubomirscy family is the biggest historic building in the city. It was erected in 16th c. on the initiative of the then owner of Rzeszow – Mikołaj Spytko-Ligeza.

In the past it served as a fortress and then also as a prison. Nowadays it houses the courts. The castle is surrounded by rectangular fortifications with elongated bastions. Close to the castle there is a small palace which in the past was a summer residence of the Lubomirscy family. At present it houses the Institute of Music of the University of Rzeszow. When in the area it is worth walking along the adjacent, charming Aleja pod Kasztanami with its Art-Nouveau buildings. The most interesting is the residence No. 10 the shape of which resembles a Romantic castle. On its facade there is a sun clock with the inscription saying: ‘You can see the time, you cannot know the time’.
