Przyslup – the place where dogs follow the bear tracks!

Unusual place, unusual event!

Przyslup is a small village hidden in the wild forests of the Bieszczady Mountains. It livens up when the Dogsled Racing Along the Bear Tracks commences. The name of the race is not accidental, as it refers to the marked course that follows the trail of the Bieszczady bear. This two-day event draws top competitors (both dogs and drivers) from the whole country, as it is included in the events of the Polish Cup. Dogsled races are of sprint character over distances of 5 to 16 kilometers. Participants compete in several categories, depending on the number of dogs on the sled. Here, sledges pulled by eight dogs as well as single skiers running along with their four-legged friends may be admired. Moreover, middle-distance races of a ‘professional’ character with a money price for the winners are organised. The picturesque landscapes of the Bieszczady Mountains create the unique atmosphere of the place. Thus, the Bieszczady Mountains with their unspoilt wilderness constitute an  ideal location for dogsled races. Natural steep upward and downward slopes as well as a heavy snowfall make excellent conditions for such sporting events. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Przyslup dogsled races are gaining in popularity.

Sled dog breeds likely to be seen at the race

The Siberian Husky is the main ‘actor’ in the ‘performance’. Due to being unbelievably fast and hardy it is called ‘the North Express’. However, almost all dogs of northern breeds run in the race, among which Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute and Greenland Dog are the most popular. Nevertheless, many other crossbreeds of setters, pointers, Alsatians and greyhounds also successfully participate in the races. Spectators of the show may admire not only the strength and hardiness of sledge dogs but also the enjoyment they get from performing their task. The championship in Przyslup is an event that attracts and unites scores of dog lovers.

Especially for guests…

The family Ski Run is as an additional special attraction for all guests of the Przyslup event. Anyone willing to take part in the run may compete to get the winner’s cup. Diversity of the unforgettable the Bieszczady landscapes makes the courses stunningly attractive. Tourists may also acquire sports clothes and equipment needed for dogsled races. After the competition both participants and guests gather at the ‘musher evening’, which other dog lovers. Guests are also offered some hot meals and wine there. The Przyslup event guarantees memorable experiences to all competitors and spectators as well. Apart from the attractions provided in Przyslup itself, guests may ski on a nearby slope in Cisna or hire a snow scooter there. In the vicinity of Przyslup there is a broad accommodation base ranging from small agricultural households to bigger guesthouses  that welcome all guests with open arms.

Dogsled race promoters

Tomasz Kudelka, and outstanding sportsman and musher, who won prestigious titles of the World, European and Polish Champion in sled dog races, is the leading promoter of the Dogsled racing Along the Bear tracks. Mr Kudelka lives in the Bieszczady Mountains, where together with his family he runs ‘Oberza Biesisko’, an inn that offers delicious cuisine and comfortable lodgings.
