The “Pod Kasztanami” Avenue (Under the Chestnut-trees Avenue)
It is a favourite walking place in Rzeszow.
The Avenue runs between the castle moat and a line of enchanting villas dating from the turn of the 19th century. It was in 19th century when the Rzeszów councillors realised that it was a special place for Rzeszow.
Therefore they imposed a condition for those townsmen who intended to build houses along this Avenue: it had to be extraordinarily beautiful architecture. Two architects managed to fulfill this condition: Kazimierz Hołubowicz, who erected the Neo-Baroque villa “with Mickiewicz” (holding the bust of the poet in its niche) and Mateusz Tadeusz Te-kielski, who built two villas in Swiss style here (today the seats of Radio Rzeszow and the Marma Polish Foils Company). The latter is referred to as the “Pod Sową” Villa (“Under the owl” Villa).
For many people this house is a truly philosophical-architectonic poem. It owes its name to the sculpture of an owl on the fronton, symbolizing wisdom. Next to it, a sun-dial was placed, under which there is a quotation from the Bible, “Vides horam, nescis horam” (“You see the hour, you don’t know the hour”).
